Archbishop Janani Luwum was a prominent Ugandan religious leader and an outspoken advocate for human rights during the political turmoil of the 1970s in Uganda. He was born on January 4, 1922, in the northern region of Uganda. Luwum became the third Archbishop of the Church of Uganda in 1974 and was well-respected for his efforts to promote peace and justice within a context marked by dictator Idi Amin’s brutal regime.

Luwum was known for his commitment to speaking out against government oppression and the violation of human rights. He became a vocal critic of Amin’s government, particularly in relation to the widespread abuses, including arbitrary arrests, killings, and torture of political opponents. His advocacy for justice and peace made him a target.

Tragically, Archbishop Luwum’s life was cut short when he was arrested on February 16, 1977, and subsequently killed under suspicious circumstances. His death drew international condemnation and highlighted the extreme human rights violations occurring in Uganda during Amin’s rule.

Janani Luwum is remembered as a martyr and a symbol of courage for his commitment to justice, and he continues to inspire many in the fields of faith and human rights advocacy. In 2015, he was posthumously honored with a commemorative statue in Uganda, and his legacy is celebrated within both the Anglican Church and broader Ugandan society.

One of the most anticipated movies is Janani: The Last Stand, a movie that has been in preparation since 2019 and is currently in post production.

The film has been supported by Content Development Support Program (CDSP) under the Uganda Communications Commission.

In ‘Janani: The Last Stand,’ we delve into the world of Archbishop Janani Luwum, a celebrated Anglican saint who stood his ground against Idi Amin’s tyranny even when he knew that his life and those of others around him was in danger.

The film explores the archbishop’s last meeting with President Idi Amin before his death. The archbishop, who had been rescuing unjustly convicted people, sent a letter criticizing the government for atrocities hence infuriating the president and his henchmen. Amin had to arrest him and accuse him of treason when rebel soldiers attacked his military. With the archbishop in custody, Idi Amin had all the power to do whatever he wished or did he?

Through a captivating storyline, we witness the unraveling of Janani’s’ carefully crafted facade and how he won over the hearts of many. It’s a powerful exploration of the price of ambition and the healing power of love and redemption.
